A Long-Term Housing Project for Individuals with Mental Health Challenges
Les Habitations Normand-Bergeron, located in Lachine, have been welcoming individuals living with mental health disorders for over 20 years. This program, managed by Groupe d’entraide Lachine, aims to provide affordable housing and daily support to these vulnerable individuals. Currently, one unit is available, and more will become available by fall 2026 with the creation of 24 new units, offering further opportunities for those in need of a safe and structured environment to support their recovery.
An Initiative by Groupe d’entraide Lachine
Groupe d’entraide Lachine, a non-profit organization, continues to play a key role in supporting these residents, providing not just a roof over their heads but also a nurturing and supportive environment. Funding for the new housing has already been approved, and construction is expected to begin by mid-March. This project aligns with a long-term vision to maintain low-income housing models while responding to the growing needs of individuals affected by mental health issues.
Daily Support and Community Activities
The concept behind Les Habitations Normand-Bergeron is based on close support for residents, thanks to the presence of mental health workers available from Monday to Friday. Additionally, regular community activities are organized, fostering a sense of solidarity among residents. The organization also hosts events such as summer barbecues in the building’s courtyard, helping residents connect and strengthen social bonds.
A Structured Environment for Personalized Support
A Model for Reintegration and Recovery
This program goes beyond providing housing; it allows residents to gradually reintegrate into society. Some have returned to the workforce, supported by the Emploi Québec program, and are now working directly with Groupe d’entraide Lachine. Thanks to this structured support, many residents have progressed without needing hospitalization and have regained a degree of independence in their daily lives. This program demonstrates that with the right support, individuals with mental health challenges can live autonomous and active lives within the community.
Les Habitations Normand-Bergeron thus provide an environment that fosters recovery, not only through housing but also by integrating social and professional life, allowing residents to rebuild their lives on a strong and stable foundation.
